I recently set up a self-hosted version of Appsmith to start building apps for my low-code consultancy. Usually, I use Retool because of its flexibility, though the $50/user price tag for their business plan adds up quickly. To explore alternatives, I decided to test a self-hosted version of Appsmith, a supposedly open-source platform. But what does “open source” really mean for customization and ease of setup?

This article aims to save you time by outlining the strengths and limitations I encountered while setting up and using Appsmith.
